Smart villages began to appear in Ukraine

Artificial intelligence has shown what the Ukrainian village will look like in the future. Traditions and crafts will be combined with modern technologies. The image of the future Ukrainian village shows a mix of old and new technologies. The houses in the village will combine both modern and classical building elements.

But this is the result of artificial intelligence. In fact, smart villages have been appearing in Ukraine since 2018, and they look a little different. The village of Voloske in the Dnipro region is a clear example.

Voloske is now actively changing: it has recently built its own water supply network and implemented a waste management programme. And thanks to the cooperation of the community and the regional administration with Mastercard and PrivatBank, an experiment in moving to a cashless lifestyle has become possible. The project partners have integrated banking services into rural life. Everyone, from pensioners to schoolchildren, has felt the changes,” said the Head of Voloske village.

Thanks to the Mastercard-supported Smart Village experiment, everyone in the village has access to banking services. Currently, 9 out of 10 villagers use cards.

An ATM and self-service terminals have been installed in the village, as well as POS terminals in all shops. People can now receive their salaries and pensions on the card instead of travelling to town, saving time and money.

Innovative payment solutions should be developed not only in big cities, but throughout Ukraine, because they bring speed and security to every Ukrainian.

We’re all used to paying with a bank card, but using a card at school is new for both children and their parents.

The card is now used to monitor attendance. The student scans the card when entering and leaving the school and parents receive a notification when their child enters and leaves the school. The data is also used to determine the number of meals served in the school canteen.

The smart school is one of the main areas for further development of this project. It is very important to involve children in modern technologies and banking, because children are the most active in perceiving innovations and becoming cashless leaders in their own families,’ emphasises the  Head of the Privatbank Press Centre.

Installing terminals in shops, self-service boxes and checkpoints in schools are the first steps in modernising the village.

Such large-scale ideas show that villages are developing and becoming more modern and comfortable to live in. This is particularly important as, according to statistics, almost a quarter of the Ukrainian population lives in rural areas
