Competencies for Smart Villages: RURALED and “Heimat 2.0” Follow the Same Success Principles

The focus of the RURALED project is the development of competencies for Smart Villages. In the process, we have found that, in addition to the development of digital solutions, the promotion of digital skills, expertise in various fields, project management, and community engagement are crucial. These insights are summarized in the current Work Package 2 report.

At the political level, the federal government of Germany has also recognized the importance of these competencies and, with the funding initiative “Heimat 2.0,” has specifically initiated the strengthening of digital and social skills on the ground. The initiative not only supports the development of technical skills within project teams and partner municipalities but also promotes social competencies that are essential for a successful digital transformation. “Heimat 2.0” is part of the “Region gestalten” program and contributes to the sustainable digital development of rural areas.

These developments and findings at the federal level highlight that the RURALED approach, which links digital and social competencies, represents an important step toward the successful development of Smart Villages and the long-term strengthening of rural regions.
